What Does a Wedding Dress Actually Cost?
The price of a wedding dress isn't always the complete cost of buying one. Fabrics, construction, designer collections and where you shop can all influence the price, while alterations and other extras can affect your overall budget.
In this guide, we'll explain what you're actually paying for, which additional costs to consider and how wedding dress pricing works in practice, using our own collection and pricing at Pure Brides as a real-world example.

Why we wrote this guide
The price tag on a dress is not the whole bridal budget. Alterations, delivery, storage and the accessories you choose need considering too, and discovering them late is frustrating.
We want you to understand our prices before you visit, and to feel comfortable telling us what you want to spend. This guide brings together Pure's gown ranges, payment options and separate charges so you can plan on a clear basis.
Why we charge what we charge
At Pure Brides, we believe every bride deserves an extraordinary experience, whatever her budget.
We've carefully curated our collection to offer beautiful designer wedding dresses at accessible price points, with the majority of our gowns between £1,600 and £2,000.
We invest in the things that really matter: knowledgeable stylists, beautiful private suites, genuine choice and an experience that makes finding your dress feel every bit as special as the occasion itself.
We're not trying to be the cheapest or the most expensive bridal showroom. We're here to offer exceptional value, beautiful dresses and a level of service that leaves our brides feeling they've received so much more than they expected.
An extraordinary experience. Without an extraordinary price tag.
That does not mean every optional service is included in the gown price. Our Classic appointment is complimentary, including Saturdays, with 90 minutes, a private suite and dedicated stylist for the bride and up to four guests. Paid appointment upgrades are optional, and the separate costs are explained below.
What makes a wedding dress more expensive?
Materials, construction, detail, designer and production choices can all influence a gown's price. The amount of work is not always visible from a photograph or even from the outside of a simple-looking dress.
Fabric, detail and embellishment
Fabric composition, drape, layers, lace placement and the method of applying detail can make a difference. More decoration does not automatically mean a better or more expensive dress.
Fit, construction and alterations
Internal support and careful construction are part of the gown itself. Alterations are a separate service to refine the fit or make feasible changes, and are not included in Pure's gown prices.
Rush orders
Some designers offer rush orders, and any charge needs checking for the chosen gown. A short timeline does not automatically mean a rush fee: we can also explore designers' available stock and our collection.
Designer and collection
Collections are designed at different price points and offer different materials, construction and options. A name can be part of the appeal, but it does not decide which dress is best for you.
Production
Methods, scale and finishing affect the work involved. Country of manufacture alone is not a reliable quality ranking.
Where you buy
Specialist bridal shopping can offer a carefully chosen designer collection, experienced guidance and a private appointment. Those are meaningful differences, not just refreshments and interiors. Different businesses offer different combinations, so compare the actual gown and service.
At the very top of the market
Luxury and couture collections elsewhere can involve different design and production arrangements, including individually commissioned work. They are not the same as Pure's standard-size made-to-order offer, and a higher price is not proof that a dress is right for you.

How to spend less, and what to watch out for
There is nothing wrong with having a budget. The useful question is which available dress gives you what matters most at a complete cost that feels comfortable.
Buy directly from our collection
At Pure, these gowns start at £800. You are choosing an existing dress rather than waiting for a new production version. Its size, condition and any alteration work need considering individually. We will explain those details before you decide; an available gown is not automatically ready to wear that day.
Simpler silhouettes
Simplicity is a design choice, not a guarantee of a lower price. A different fabric, collection or balance of detail may help you achieve the look you want for less. Tell your stylist which features matter most.
Planning further ahead
Planning ahead can leave more ordering options open, but having three months or less does not mean you are unwelcome. Talk to us about your date; our timing guide explains the routes we can check.
When a low price needs a closer look
A low price alone does not establish that a dress is poor quality or a copy. Check the individual seller, product information, delivery date, returns terms and likely alteration needs.
Product descriptions and photographs
Make sure you understand which dress is being supplied, its materials and the details included. A photograph cannot tell you how a gown feels or supports you.
Professional support
Ask who can answer questions before and after the order. Online and high-street retailers have different service arrangements; it is not accurate to assume there is no support or accountability.
Different retail models
Some businesses concentrate on stock sales or a more self-led experience. Others reserve specialist appointment time. The important thing is understanding the particular offer, not ranking every retailer by a label.
The true cost of your wedding dress
The price tag on a dress is not the total investment. Here is what to allow for beyond the gown itself.
A note on alterations
We introduce you to an independent seamstress who works with Pure Brides. You arrange fittings with her and pay her directly. She quotes for the work your dress needs, so the recommended £150 to £500 budget is not a guarantee that every alteration bill will fall within it.
Made-to-order gowns use the closest suitable standard designer size. They are not individually cut to your measurements, so alterations are a normal part of achieving the fit.
Compare the complete cost, not just the route
Neither ordering a new gown nor buying directly from our collection tells you, on its own, which will cost less overall. Compare the individual dress, the alterations needed and the separately quoted extras.
As an illustration, a £1,800 gown plus our recommended £150 to £500 alterations budget gives £1,950 to £2,300 before delivery, storage and any optional extras. That is not a complete quote or a promise about the alteration work your dress will need.
Budget estimator
Use this as a starting point for your gown and alterations budget. It is not a complete quote for your wedding outfit.
Select options for an illustrative gown and alterations estimate.
Gowns you can buy directly from our collection start at £800. No upper collection price is assumed.
All three choices use our recommended £150 to £500 planning allowance, not different price bands. Your choice describes the work to discuss, not its price. Your seamstress will assess which fit or length adjustments your gown needs.
An illustrative guide, not a quote. Alterations depend on your gown and may fall outside £150 to £500. You book and pay the independent seamstress directly. Alterations, delivery and storage are charged separately from the gown, and chosen accessories are additional. Any designer customisations or rush charges are confirmed individually and excluded here.
How to pay for your dress
We know that even when you find the perfect dress, the question of how to pay for it is real. These are the options at Pure.
Pay in full
Payment in full when ordering is our preferred arrangement.
50/50 payment option
We also offer an internal 50/50 option. Ask us to explain the payment arrangements before you commit.
Third-party finance
Third-party finance is available, subject to the provider's terms and eligibility. Check the current costs and terms with the provider before deciding.
These options are here to help you understand how payment can work, not to encourage spending beyond your means. Alterations, delivery and storage are charged separately.
How bridal shopping options compare
Different retailers combine product, support and premises in different ways. Here is what to check, with Pure's own arrangements made clear.
| What to consider | Pure Brides | Other appointment-led showrooms | High street or online |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prices before deciding | Ask for the gown price and separately charged extras before committing. | Check prices and the full quote for the gown you want. | Check the product price and any delivery or other charges. |
| Product and construction | A curated designer bridal collection; try the gown and discuss its structure and fit. | Collections, designers and construction vary. | Compare the actual product, fabric, support and finish. |
| Ordering options | Made-to-order gowns, designers' available stock and purchases directly from our collection, subject to availability. | Ask which stock and ordering routes are offered. | Check stock, sizing and the delivery commitment for the specific product. |
| Advice and appointments | Classic is complimentary, including Saturdays: 90 minutes, private suite and dedicated stylist. | Appointment format, expertise and any fee vary. | The level of personal advice and the shopping format vary. |
| Additional costs | Alterations, delivery and storage separate; any chosen accessories or confirmed dress-specific extras additional. | Ask what is included and what is separate. | Check alterations, delivery and other relevant charges. |
| Gown prices | Made-to-order £1,300 to £3,500; collection purchases from £800. | Ask for the current range rather than infer it from the retailer's positioning. | Check the available products rather than rely on a general market band. |
Is it worth it?
This is the most personal question in this guide, and the one we want to answer honestly rather than commercially.
For some brides, a carefully chosen gown bought directly from our collection from £800 is exactly right. It looks beautiful, fits well after alterations, and lets you redirect budget towards other priorities: your honeymoon, your venue and your flowers. That is a completely valid choice.
For other brides, the dress is the singular priority. It is the thing they have imagined since childhood, the piece of the day that belongs entirely to them. For those brides, investing £2,500 or £3,500 in a made-to-order dress from a designer they love is not extravagance. It is clarity about what matters most.
Who is a Premium Showroom right for?
Who is the Pure experience right for?
If you value specialist guidance, a private suite and a thoughtfully chosen designer collection, the Pure approach may be a good fit. If the current gowns do not work within your comfortable total budget, we will be honest about that too.

Pricing questions we hear every day
Made-to-order gowns range from £1,300 to £3,500, with the majority of our gowns between £1,600 and £2,000. Gowns you can buy directly from our collection start at £800, subject to what is available.
No. We recommend budgeting £150 to £500 separately. We introduce you to an independent seamstress who works with Pure; you arrange fittings and pay her directly. She quotes for the work your dress needs.
Payment in full when ordering is our preferred arrangement, but we also offer an internal 50/50 option and third-party finance, subject to the provider's terms and eligibility. Ask us to explain the arrangements before committing.
Delivery and storage are both charged separately. Any accessories you choose are additional. Designer changes and a rush service, where offered and needed, may have an extra charge that must be confirmed for the actual gown. Cleaning and preservation after the wedding are optional later costs.
It is ordered in the closest suitable standard designer size, not individually cut to your measurements. Alterations refine the fit for your body and the dress. Their extent depends on the particular gown and the changes needed.
